Sports Photography

Sainsbury’s Diamond League

This weekend was spent doing sports photography photographing the Sainsburys Diamond League in Birmingham.

It would have been lovely to see so many peoples favourite Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt as well as some of our other world favourite athletes and Olympic Medallists of Mo Farah, Christine Ohuruogu and Shelly-Anne Fraser-Pryce. For all those that think sports photography is an easy profession to be in, have you ever seen an overweight photographer ….carrying around 3 bodies, 4 lenses as well as other little bits? Walking and running around an athletics field for a number of hours in the day? Sports photography is a better workout than most gym classes!

You regularly fall in love with new lenses; after this weekend my latest love is the Canon 300mm prime, f2.8, its not the lightest, but with the monopod on and the ‘Dick Whittington’ package on shoulder stance, was not too difficult to carry.

It was great to also see professional photographers with a disability covering the paralympians too, especially as one of my friends with a disability also wants to become a photographer.

It is always surprising just how much photography equipment we all leave around when covering sports photography, thousands of pounds of kit hanging around without worrying about it! It is literally too gruelling to carry your equipment with you everywhere, so belt bags are a must as well as the photographers code of being able to leave stuff around safely.

Equipment to cover this type of sports photography event

24-70/105mm – A wide angle, needed for close ups of athletes at finishing lines and on medal ceremonies

70-200mm – to cover most of the races, at the distance you often shoot from it is wide enough to get a whole start line in, as well as focus on one athlete in particular.

300mm/500mm – for close ups

Some photographers also have also choose to use another wide angle in their sports photography, on a remote or trigger such as a Pocket Wizard this enables them to take their sports photography to another level, capturing  both the start and finishing lines of a 100 meter sprint for example.

Here are a few highlights from the weekends sports photography workout.

And my orange sunglasses were not sponsored by Sainsbury’s ….
